Parents often ask me which games are "okay" for their kids to play. I believe it's important to consider what you are actually doing as the player. Are you solving puzzles or killing people? Everything we consume into our mind affects our brain, just like everything we consume into our mouths affects our bodies (ever felt sick after eating? was it quantity or quality?) Repeated exposure will normalize behavior while desensitizing to content. Tons of research has found that too much screen time is harmful to developing brains and violence can lead to increased aggression and decreased empathy. Some of the more socially conscious game designers are considering how we can use the draw of gaming to improve behavior. To date, I have only been able to locate 2 games that claim to be pro-social: Chibi Robo and Super Mario Sunshine. I have not played either (I'm not a gamer) but they supposedly reward players for being helpful rather than selfish (the case in most popular games). For parents who want to allow a bit of gaming these might be a good choice. Just know that this will not make them popular at school and they will likely be encouraged to play the shooter games much sooner than you'd prefer. Just always remember that you are the parent so Be Aware of what your kids are doing and what it could be doing to them, Protect them from harm by decreasing risk factors and increasing protective factors, Prepare them to make healthy choices online and off and Respond appropriately if you have a concern. Your kids need you to be iWise.www.news.iastate.edu/news/2009/apr/vgbenefits.shtml ... See MoreSee Less
